Question of the Week (11/5/10)

When working on your personal Macbeth journals this weekend, replace the current theme under the subject of violence with this one:

Destruction ensues when ambition goes unchecked by moral constraints.

It is clearer than the previous theme.

Write about the character you find most intriguing and why. Cite a quote from the text to illuminate your reasoning using MLA format. Post by the end of school on Tuesday.

  1. I find that Banquo is the most interesting for me. He seems truthful and honest, and although the witches told him that his children would be kings, he isn't actively working towards that goal, he seems content to sit back and let it happen, unlike macbeth. I don't know whether this is respect for the king or just that he isn't very ambitious. I think it is respect for the king however, due to this quote.
"If you can look into the seeds of time,
And say which grain will grow and which will not,
Speak then to me, who neither beg nor fear
Your favors nor your hate." (Banquo 13) He wants to know the future for him, so must be somewhat ambitious, but then he doesn't act on it, which I think shows that he wouldn't want to hurt King Duncan. He seems to be a calming influence on Macbeth, a counter of sorts to Lady Macbeth. When he was around Macbeth, macbeth didn't think about killing the King, however as soon as Macbeth is with Lady Macbeth he acts rashly.

  2. I think that Lady Macbeth is the most interesting because she is a very evil character and a very interesting person. An example of when she is evil is when she is trying to convince Macbeth to kill King Duncan. Her plan is to drug the guards and then stab King Duncan and put the daggers in the guards hands. This is a very good plan but i wouldn't think that a lady such as Lady Macbeth would come up with a plan like this. This is what she says "When Duncan is asleep-Whereto the rather shall his day's hard journey Soundly invite him- his two chamberlains will i with wine and wassail so convince that memory the warder of the brain, shall be a fume and and the receipt of reason a limbeck only: when in swinish sleep their drenched natures lies as in a death, what cannot you and i perform upon his spongy officers who shall bear the guilt of our great quell." This is why i think that she is evil.

  3. In my opinion, I think that Macbeth is the most intriguing character. I think this because he seems to have this 2-sided incentive. In one scene, Macbeth wants to become King and he seems like he would kill the previous king to achieve the role. Like in scene 5 of Act 1. Macbeth says, "The Prince of Cumberland! That is a step on which i must fall down or else o'erleap"(15). On the other hand Macbeth has a consciousness. He feels that he owes the King. In scene 7 of act 1, Macbeth says that "We will proceed no further in this business: He hath honored me of late" (22). I also agree with conor that Lady Macbeth very interesting qualities, but I still think that Macbeth is the most intriguing character.

  4. Lady Macbeth is the most interesting character in the book so far. She is mysterious and tricky. Her thought process is very interesting too because she finds out about the prophecy and the next time she see her husband she challenges him into murder King Duncan.
"Art thou afeard to be the same in thou act and valor as thou art in desire? Wouldst thou have that which thou esteem'st the ornament of life. And live a coward in thine own esteem?" (Shakespeare page 22).
I wonder if she has a mental problem, or if her morals are just completely messed up. After this quote, she also comes up with an ingenious way to kill him. Lady Macbeth is definitely not normal and I want to know more about her.
I agree with Connor that Lady Macbeth could be evil, but I think that there is more of a story behind it than just that.

  5. Ever since I read the scene which first introduced us to Lady Macbeth, I found her to be very intriguing. Lady Macbeth is so interesting to me because her view is very important to Macbeth, she wants power, and she is very cunning. From learning about the Shakespearean era in eighth grade, I was taught that women were not thought of very highly and, aside from Queen Elizabeth, were not thought to be of utmost importance in England's society. From that knowledge, I interpreted that Lady Macbeth's role would be a small one and and did not believe her to act how she did. What really intrigued me was how she convinced her husband to murder the King by insulting him. Shakespeare shows that although Macbeth had turned from his first idea of killing King Duncan, Lady Macbeth forced him into rethinking that by calling him a coward when she says, "Art thou afeard to be the same in thou act and valor as thou art in desire" (22)? I had not expected it, but in response to his wife's taunts, Macbeth followed through with killing the King. Lady Macbeth is very power-hungry because she proves that she is willing to murder her own King in order to become Queen. Her extraordinary cunning is obvious to anyone who reads this play because of her excellent plan for the King's murder.
I agree with what Karthik said about Macbeth having two sides to him.

  6. I find that lady Macbeth is the most intriguing character in the play. In Act &, scene 5, Lady Macbeth says "fill me, from the crown to the toe, top full of direst cruelty!" (1.17.43-4). She is asking to be as mean as she possibly can. We can tell the lady macbeth really wants the king to die. What confuses me is why lady Macbeth wants to be queen so badly. It seems to me that lady Macbeth may have some reason other than the high position to kill king Duncan. Maybe she wants to take over the crown herself, or she wants to hide a secret that Duncan knows of. This may not be the case, but it appears to me that Lady macbeth is to dedicated to her idea to have such a straight forward reason such as becoming queen to motivate her to kill Duncan. The king has also been very kind to both Lady Macbeth and her husband. Why would the two want to kill someone who had been so kind to them?
I agree with Evie. Since Lady Macbeth was a women, she would have to be doubly convincing to have Macbeth follow her orders. Or maybe, Macbeth has a very weak character and can be influenced easily.

  7. I feel that Lady Macbeth is the most interesting character in this play. I believe that she is a very manipulative person, especially to her husband. In Act 1, scene 5 she challenges Macbeths' manhood so that he will kill the king with her. I also think that she is a greedy person. I believe that she really wants the power and money that comes with being the Queen. I think that she knows how to get her husband to do what she wants. She has a very big role in the play because in scene 5 she controls what happens to the king and in the rest of the play. I think that she is a very smart woman and I think she uses her knowledge to get what she wants. I think that in that time period one of the worst things that a man could do was be a coward. I think that Lady Macbeth knows that the last thing her husband wants to be is a coward and not manly. I think that she might have more of the personality of a man in that time. She wants what she wants and isn't afraid to get her hands dirty. "Make thick my blood, Stop up th' access and passage to remorse, That no compunctious visitings of nature" (16). Here she is saying to God to make her feel like a man in that she won't feel compassion for anyone and won't be "soft" in nature so that she can have the guts to kill the king. I agree with Evie in that I was surprised when Lady Macbeth had and has such an important part in the play.

  8. I feel that lady Macbeth is the most interesting person in the play because she constantly wants to rid herself of her kindness which I find intriguing at one point lady Macbeth is standing on the battlements and says "Come, you spirits that tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here, and fill me, from the crown to the toe, top-full of direst cruelty!" (1.5.41-44). What lady Macbeth is asking for is she's asking the spirits to take away her female weakness, and replace it with the strength of a man. She felt she needed to be strong to accomplish the deed of killing the king. As Lady Macbeth says this she is accepting the fact that she is a woman but at the same time, she feels that she is week and wants to be freed of this weakness. Another reason she's interesting to me, which comes of this is that she is a very symbolic figure for women who do not feel powerful. Lady Macbeth is a very strong woman and it's intriguing how far she would go to complete her ambitions. I agree with Evie on how cunning and power lusting Lady Macbeth is, and I also think that that is what drives he on, her lust for power.

  9. I think that Lady Macbeth is the most intriguing character in Macbeth because of her ambition for power. We know very little about her, so it is hard to tell what motivates her to kill Duncan and be the queen. In Shakespeare's time, women were thought of as weaker than men and were not as powerful. Lady Macbeth is the opposite of this because she really wants power. She says "Come, you spirits that tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here, and fill me, from the crown to the toe, top-full of direst cruelty!" (1.5. 41-44). She wants to become a man because women are weak and she wants to be strong when she kills duncan. She also wants to be cruel enough to follow through with the plan. She is also very manipulative to Macbeth when he decides he doesn't want to kill Duncan.
I agree with Evie that Lady Macbeth is a much more major character in the play than I expected her to have.

  10. To me, Lady Macbeth is the most intriguing character in the story because of her determination and way of manipulating. She managed to convince Macbeth to kill the king, which is something that he never would have done before she came along, and still has doubts. Lady Macbeth shows her determination and power by saying, " fill me from the crown to the toe top-full of direst cruelty. Make thick my blood. Stop up the access and passage to remorse" (1.5.43-45). This quote shows how much she wants the power to kill the king, and not feel any sorrow or guilt. She is saying that she wants to become a man, with full power and no limits to freedom. Back then, women were very limited in what they were allowed to participate in, and men had all the rights. I agree with Erica that Lady Macbeth is also very mysterious and tricky since we don't know much about her but we do know a lot of her secrets.

  11. Lady Macbeth has been the most intriguing and interesting character to me so far. It seems as if she loves Macbeth, as shown when he returns home to the castle and they go to their quarters together. At the same time, she is incredibly greedy, and takes advantage of the power Macbeth has earned throughout the years. Another reason I am lead to think that Lady Macbeth doesn't fully love her husband is that when he tells her that he's not going to kill the king, she questions his manhood and calls him a coward. "Wouldst thou have that which thou esteem'st the ornament of life, and live a coward in thine own esteem, letting "I dare not" wait upon "I would," like the poor cat i' th' adage?"(22)So far in the story, she has been a two-sided character which makes her interesting. I agree with Evie; I didn't think that Lady Macbeth would be such an important character in the book.

  12. Just like a lot of others I find Lady Macbeth as the most interesting character in this play. She is so different than everyone else in the play which makes it entertaining to read when she's in the play. Her ideas are very drastic making the play more interesting. Also, she seems like she is very controlling and confident like when she questions Macbeth's courage to kill the king, "We fail? But screw your courage to the sticking-place, And we’ll not fail" (1.7 59-61). Here she's saying that if Macbeth can get some courage then they won't fail. I agree with what Sarah said about Lady Macbeth being manipulative. I feel that that is the perfect word to describe her.

  13. I think Macbeth is the most intriguing character in this play. He is very greedy and sneaky and too ambitious for his own good. He was just appointed Thane of Cawdor, but now he wants to be king and he got upset when Malcolm was made Prince of Cumberland:
The Prince of Cumberland! That is a step
On which I must fall down, or else o'erleap,
For in my way it lies.(15)
Macbeth is also easily overpowered by other people. His wife, Lady Macbeth, can change his mind easily and can pretty much make him do whatever she wants. When Macbeth decides that he doesn't want to kill Duncan, Lady Macbeth calls him a coward so he changes his mind.
I agree with Karthik, in that Macbeth definitely has two-sided incentive.

  14. While I agree with others that Lady Macbeth is very interesting, I think that her husband’s character is even more intriguing. While it is made extremely clear how Lady Macbeth and Banquo feel about the Witches’ prophecies, it is ambiguous as to Macbeth’s opinion. Whenever Macbeth makes a statement that should tell the reader his true intentions, one can argue he is being influenced by someone else. At one point in the play, he makes it very clear that he wants to kill the King, but later he says that he does not want to kill Duncan “We will proceed no further in this business” (1.7 31). Macbeth also talks about how Malcolm stands in his way to the throne. “The Prince of Cumberland! That is a step On which I must fall down, or else o’erleap, For in my way it lies” (1.5 48-50). Banquo cautions Macbeth about believing the witches while Lady Macbeth sees the Witches’ prophecy as an opening for her to get her way. Even the Witches are manipulating Macbeth by foretelling some true things (Thane of Cawdor) along with uncertain futures. I agree with Karthik that it appears that Macbeth is two sided, but I would argue that is not Macbeth’s personality that is two sided; it just that his two main influences, Lady Macbeth and Banquo, are opposites. Because of all this ambiguity surrounding Macbeth’s true nature, I think he is the most interesting character because he offers a lot to think about.

  15. I too find Lady Macbeth's character quite intriguing. She seems to be the mastermind behind all plots and the blind follower of ambition. You would think, since Macbeth comes across as a strong, ambitious fellow, that he could possibly be the one running the show, but it seems Lady Macbeth is the dominant one. Although we know very little about her, you can surely tell that she is very manipulative and power greedy. In the story so far, it shows how very little she likes to think things through. An example is when they plan to assassinate the king, but Macbeth isn't even the heir to the throne therefore leaving Malcom King. I think throughout the story her character will somewhat change. I predict we will witness her weaker more vulnerable side so it is hard to see how her character really operates without really experiencing her character in full. The quote that I find best describes her blindly ambitious character is, "We fail? But screw your courage to the sticking-place, And we’ll not fail" (1.7 59-61). She manipulates her husband by showing him how weak she thinks he is. In this I find her the most confusing and interesting character so far.

  16. I also agree with Nathalie that Macbeth is probably just as interesting, maybe more than Lady Macbeth. It is very weird how he blindly follows his wife as she does her ambition for her husband.

  17. I think that Lady Macbeth is the most interesting. Although villainous, I find myself wanting to know what she is going to do next, and even though I don’t always agree with what she does, she seems like a strong woman because she is always in charge. Back then, you would think that the man would be the superior figure in their relationship that she, is clearly the one who calls the shots, and this is something that should be respected. This is shown on page 18 when she says “Only look up clear. To alter favor ever is to fear. Leave all the rest to me.” I agree with Evie when she says that it is surprising the amount of character that Lady Macbeth shows, and how seriously Macbeth takes her.

  18. I find Lady Macbeth to be the most intriguing character so far. She is nice but evil, and no one else other than Macbeth knows that side of her. She seems to be a woman with a lot of power. She is able to make her husband do the job of killing the king for her, but is this love? She puts her faith into Macbeth but in order for him to do a devious job. "Come, you spirits that tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here, and fill me, from the crown to the toe, top-full of direst cruelty!" (1.5.41-44). Lady Macbeth is showing her "strong side" here and putting away her feminism side. I agree with Conor about her villainous ways of acting.

  19. I find Lady Macbeth the most intriguing character. She is the most intriguing to me because she some how controls Macbeth to do tasks that Lady Macbeth can't do. For example she has made Macbeth kill the king for her so she will become queen and he king, she did this by questioning his manhood. "Look like th' innocent flower, but be the serpent under't" (1.5.66-68). This quote to me shows Lady Macbeth's controlling side and telling what Macbeth what to do. I agree with Hailey's question which is, making her husband do the job of killing the king for her, is this love?

  20. I think that lady Macbeth is the most intriguing to me because all of the times that Macbeth says that he doesn't want to kill the king, lady Macbeth is always telling him to man up and just do it. Lady Macbeth was saying "art thou afeard to be the same in thy lone act in valour as thou art in desire" (1.7.39-41). She is the one who is always planning ways to make Macbeth the king. Lady Macbeth is also interesting to me because she is the person who always has the big speeches in the story, which are normally about bossing Macbeth around. I agree with Erica because she thinks that Lady Macbeth is very mysterious and tricky.

  21. I find Lady Macbeth very interesting. She seems very harmless, and nice, but then she talks about killing King Duncan. This is very interesting because it is extremely controversial. She acts like she is innocent, too. When she says "When Duncan is asleep-- Whereto the rather shall his day's hard journey Soundly invite him--his two chamberlains Will i wine and wassail so convince, That memory, the warder of the brain, shall be a fume, and the receipt of reason A limbeck only: when in swinish sleep Their drenched nature liesas in a death, What cannot you an I perform upon Th' unguarded Duncan"(Macbeth, 1.7.61), it confused me because I thought that Macbeth wanted to kill Duncan, but it was really with greed, and hate that Lady Macbeth started this.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I think that Lady Macbeth is the most interesting character for several reasons. She pressures her husband into killing Duncan for her own betterment. Lady Macbeth really wants to be Queen, she shows this by putting her husband and herself in danger in order to get Macbeth in a position of higher power. In my opinion, Lady Macbeth is in control of Macbeth. Sometimes though, Macbeth's true colors show through, for instance in Scene VII he says that he does not want to kill Duncan.
"We will proceed no further in this business:
He hath honored me of late, and I have bought
Golden opinions from all sorts of people,
Which would be worn now in their newest gloss,
    Not cast aside so soon."
It is not long though, before Lady Macbeth gains her control again. She even gets him to take the job of murdering Duncan from her.
I agree with Rainie, I am curious to know whether Lady Macbeth does love her husband or not.

  23. I think that lady macbeth is most interesting because she wants what is best for her husband and she is not afraid to speak whats on her mind. I feel that she has a very strong opinion and if someone says no to her she will fight back to make them see her point of view. I also think that she has a dark side.
"Look like the innocent flower, but be the serpent underneath" (19)
I agree with araya that Macbeth is intriguing because he is greedy and sneaky. I personally still think that lady macbeth is the most intriguing.

  24. I think the witches are very intriguing, they say quotes that at first, they dont make sense, but when you think about it and realy anilize what they are trying to say it makes purfect sense. "Not so happy, yet much happier" (Shakespeare 9).The witches make very odd comments that you have to ponder alot for them to make sense. In the beginning of the macbeth movie they were making some sort of mystirious spell giving something to the gods. These characters have an evil hallow around them. Also i thought it was interesting how Banquo described them he said "withered" (Shakespeare 8). This give them an interesting look.

  25. I find Lady Macbeth the most interesting character because she is very manipulative. She tells her husband that she wants what is best for him but she makes him do something he doesn't want to do to make it happen. She makes it seem like she only wants Duncan dead so Macbeth will be happy but really she wants him dead out of greed. You wouldn't expect her to come up with such a terrible plan to kill Duncan but she wants Macbeth to drug Duncan's guards and stab him when he is asleep and put the knife into his hands when she is done. She also questions Macbeth's bravery to kill Duncan. "When you durst do it, then you were a man; And to be more than what you were, you would be so much more the man" (1.7. 49-50). She makes people feel bad to get her way.
I agree with hannah that Lady Macbeth has the most interesting personality so far in the story.

  26. I am most impressed with Banquo’s reaction to the witches’ foreseen future for his sons to be kings. He is cautious, yet accepts the witch’s words as a possibility. I believe Banquo is intelligent and self-confident enough to take these predictions without being blinded by their words. He isn’t so concerned with his own ambitions, but of that for his sons. He appears to be the type to step back and watch, listen and learn which could be his greatest asset. Banquo’s own personal moral fiber is intact and this is what allows his future to thrive though his sons.

This quote “speaks then to me, who neither beg not fear. Your favors nor your hate” (9) depicts Banquo as a cautious, yet curious man who will consider the words of the witches, but is a skeptic at heart. He is not afraid of the witches’ spells or the good favors the witches could grant him. He sees the witches omens as only entertainment and to be wary of their words, as in the quote ”And oftentimes to win us to our harm, The instruments of darkness tell us truths, Win us with honest trifles, to betray’s In deepest consequence”(11).

Banquo’s demise will be as a victim of Macbeth’s self-destruction, as he clearly tries to warn Macbeth. I think Banquo ambitions are not lacking, but it is his own moral constraints that will allow his sons to reign. Macbeth is a fool to listen to witches over the wisdom of that of his friend, Banquo.

  27. I have to agree that Lady Macbeth is one of the most intreging characters in the story. She is the character that makes me want to keep reading to see what happens next. I think that she is very unlike most women during that time period, and that makes her really fun to read about! Also, I think that it is very interesting how she manipulates Macbeth to get him to kill the king. A quote that illumiates her personality would be " The croaks the fatal entrance of Ducan Under my battlements"(Shakespear 17).
I agree with Hannah when she says that Lady Macbeth also has a dark side to her.

  28. I think Lady Macbeth is the most intriguing character because she seems so normal at first. Next thing you know, she wants to kill Duncan, the king. Macbeth says "When Duncan is asleep-- Whereto the rather shall his day's hard journey Soundly invite him--his two chamberlains Will I wine and wassail so convince, That memory, the warder of the brain, shall be a fume, and the receipt of reason A limbeck only: when in swinish sleep Their drenched nature liesas in a death, What cannot you an I perform upon Th' unguarded Duncan"(1.7.61), which to me seems like he is letting lady Macbeth do the killing. But the movie made me think the opposite.

  29. I think that Banquo is the most interesting character in the story. Like Jack, I think that he is content to let his prophecy play out. He isn't madly running around trying to ensure that his kids are kings, he is just living his life like normal. "If you can look into the seeds of time,
And say which grain will grow and which will not,
Speak then to me, who neither beg nor fear
Your favors nor your hate" (Shakespeare 13).
I thin that Banquo might believe the prophecy, but it is more likely that he just thinks the witches are crazy. Either way, he seems content to let things play out because he won't be surprised or affected in either circumstance.
I agree with John that lady Macbeth makes it interesting to read the play.

  30. I think that the most interesting character so far is Lady Macbeth. To most people she appears sweet and innocent, but she has a darker side that she shows only to Macbeth. Without Lady Macbeth, Macbeth wouldn’t have come up with and executed the plan to kill Duncan. Without her, I think that the whole story would have been different. Lady Macbeth says to Macbeth “What beast was’t then that made you break this enterprise to me? When you durst do it, then you were a man” (page 22). She is telling Macbeth that he is a coward to go back on his promise to her. I agree with Katie when she said that Lady Macbeth mostly controlled Macbeth, but sometimes we saw what he truly felt like.

  31. I have to agree with Cathleen when i say that Lady Macbeth is a very intruiging character. She seems like she is strong-willed and has a lot of ambition, but i wonder if she is the kind of person who would back down when the kitchen got too hot. it also seems a little suspicious that she is so intent on killing Duncan as well, when all that is in it for her is that when Macabeth becomes king she will be thanked and that she will be queen by his side. in fact, if she were to stop and think about it a little more, she would see that there are actually many more riskes to this plan than benefits. She seems to be quite a bit like Macbeth in the fact that she has a lot of ambition but possible not much ability or moral strength.

  32. ‘Character’ is a singular noun, meaning one person in a play or movie, book etcetera. ‘Witches’ is a plural noun, meaning women who are thought to possess magical, even evil, powers. After writing in my handy personal journal though, I came to the consensus that I would still consider the Witches to be one character. There’s three of them, named by number, not a personal pet name like their spirits have and they are like one entity. So far we have not seen one without the other and the back and forth, interaction between the three is mixed into many voices with the same thought. This reminds me of the muses or similarly the three fates. You know that each one is not identical and stand for different things, but there is really not much of a difference from one to the next. Normally they are referred to as ‘the nine muses’ or ‘the three fates’. Never their separate names or else people would not know who they are. Unless you are reenacting the play, it really does not matter which witch is talking. This I find ‘intriguing’ because they add a certain flow to the play that would not be there if only one was present. Also the phrases are shorter and much easier to absorb. The Witches are almost like a chorus. They all kind of chant what they foresee and add a sense of evil, mystery and complication that would not be there without them. In Macbeth, the same thing goes. I think this quote from him sums them up: “...what are you?” (8). A better question I think though would have been, ‘what do you want?’. Perhaps the second act will answer this question...
I agree with everything that Jordan said. The way he described them was interesting. Although it creeps me out a little, because I have the image of a raisin in my head as well. Nice comment :)

  33. In my oppinion Lady Macbeth is the most interestin character. I think that she is not just a normal women. She loves Macbeth, but also wants to be a queen, so she is willing to risk her lves life to become queen. She is very power hungry and is manipulative in order to gain power. I think that what she says on page 16 is very interesting and shows that she is a complex character: "Make thick my blood, Stop up th' access and passage to remorse, That no compunctious visitings of nature I think that this quote shows how much she wants power and how complex a character she is.
I agree with anjalie that Lady Macbeth is strong willed and ambitous

  34. I find Macbeth to be the most intriguing character because he is so easily influenced by what others feel is best for him. As soon as he makes up his mind, either the witches, Lady Macbeth, or his conscience makes him second-guess himself. I don't think he would turn that jealousy of Malcolm's title into murder motives without the cruel influence of his wife. First he states to his wife "We will proceed no further in the business" (Shakespeare 22) but quickly changes his mind and says "False face must hide false heart doth know" (Shakespeare 23). I agree with Natalie in that Macbeth's feeling are not his own, he his being influenced by Lady Macbeth and Banquo who are on two different sides about what Macbeth should do with his future. I think he should take a step back and follow his heart and make his decisions based on how he feels.

  35. In my oppinion I think Lady Macbeth is the most interesting charter in the play so far. It seems like she will do anything for Macbeth to be king, even if that means attempt to kill the king. She wants her and her husband to have all the power they can, and that means she wants to be king. She is strongly influenced by the amount of power she has, which can be a good or bad thing. Once Lady Macbeth was introduced in the play, there was a different kind of twist to the story. "Yet do I fear thy nature; It is too full o' th' milk of human kindness." (Lady Macbeth 16). To me, this quote means that Lady Macbeth is really concerned about how Macbeth might back out of his plan and they both could not be as powerful. I agree with Kyle how she is very power hungry and is minipulative in order to gain power.

  36. I think that the most interesting so far in Macbeth is Lady Macbeth. I like Lady Macbeth because she is very cunning and will do anything that is in her way of what she wants. I think that she has the most ambition out of all the other characters in the play. I feel that she will provoke violence and the supernatural in the acts to come. It seems that she has always had a master plan to do what she feels fit. I think the best quote that describes her willingness to do whatever it takes to get the throne is when she insults Macbeth’s manhood by saying, “such I account thy love”(Shakespeare 22). In that quote she brings the thought of love into question which also brings in Macbeth’s manhood into question also. I feel Lady Macbeth is the most interesting because she is not afraid to do whatever it takes to get what she wants, but that might eventually lead to the destroying of the people she loves. I agree with Nathalie when she says that Macbeth is probably just as interesting as Lady Macbeth. It’s surprising that he lets her control him though.

  37. Lady Macbeth is the most intriguing character for me, because you don't really know many things about her and so it's very unclear to know what you should think about her.
These are rasons why you could think that Lady Macbeth isn't very important for these play, but she convince Mabeth to kill king Duncan and thats why she is an important role in this play!
I also agree with Kyle how she is power hungry and wants to be the mightest power.

  38. I find the witches to be the most interesting characters out of this play. I realize that they aren't "one" but i believe that they come as a package. I think that the way they for tell the future of Macbeth and Banque is very interesting. Esspecially when they say "fair is foul and foul is fair" (3) Its almost as if they are trying to come across as the narrorator's but in a different way they become an odd part to the story. They seem to for shadow everything a little bit before it happens but they don't tell you exactly.
I agree with everything Bella says about how the witches are one and don't count seperatly because they are al there for the same reason. I also think it makes sense how she says that it flows with them. Nice job!

  39. I think that Macbeth is the most interesting character in the book so far. I say this mainly because he seems like a two sided person, but not in a bad way. You hear in the beginning of the book "He unseamed him from the nave to th' chops". That shows that he is an extremely brutal, ruthless man. But then later in the book when he is talking to lady Macbeth, he says things that change your view of him. He doesn't want to kill Duncan because he has been nice to Macbeth, and he is scared things may happen to him. Which is completely different from the first impression that you first get from Macbeth. I think that Macbeth is the most interesting because there are two completely different aspects of him.
I agree with Shawn that Lady Macbeth is willing to do anything to have Macbeth be King. I think that Macbeth however is more interesting.

  40. I find the witches very intriguing. I enjoyed their dialogue becuase it was very strange. They kept using anithesis. When I re-read their dialouge I relized something... They had said something about the day being "foul and fair". At first I did not get this so I re-read it. Then I relized that this reflects how Banquo and Macbeth feel about the witches. Banquo describes them as being foul and gross. Whereas Macbeth starts talking to them immediately. Banquo looks at them as being foul and Macbeth looks at them as being fair. There are other instances of this in the book as well.

  42. I think that the most interesting character is Lady Macbeth. She has turned mad, and done so many things in the play that could have been done differently, and more efficiently, and also better. She pushes Macbeth to do things, because she does not think that she can do these things alone. I think that this makes her very interesting above teh other characters.
