Question of the Week (10/23/09)

Setting your stage: At this point, we are going to pause to set our own stages. Choose a place that really interests you, whether it's a place you've been and loved (or hated), a place whose details you know well (a family's kitchen, a friend's basement, a business you frequent), or someplace you would like to know better.
Write out (informally for now) everything you can about that space. The more details, the better, and your goal is to help your readers see and hear as much as possible in that space. Then choose a time when at least a couple of people might occupy that space. Choosing a particular event—a holiday, a party, a funeral, a meeting—might work well, but so might a more ordinary time, like when everyone first gets up in the morning, or when the store closes in the evening. Do not to worry for now about what might happen there. Right now only set the stage. Post by Sunday 10/25 and bring a copy of your space to class on Monday. Enjoy the weekend.

  1. If I have to choose one place I know and love, it would be Martha's Vineyard. I summer there for only a few weeks every summer, but I love it. I stay right outside of Vineyard heaven, its a small town called West chop. There is a long dirt road going through the center of town. When you come to a stop sign there is a large inn, a general store, a few tennis courts, and a building we call the "club house" If you turn right before the inn, you are lead down a narrow road fit for barley two cars. My house is an open summery white house, it has a big porch and a few balcony's up the front. There is a pretty garden in the front and an out door shower in the back. There are tables and chair and a barbeque on the back patio near the backdoor which leads out towards the woods. It smells like ocean and grass. There are trees everywhere and flowers practically everywhere you look. One thing that happens everyday and has become such a normal part of life on the vineyard is about four o clock every afternoon, all the kids go down to the tennis courts and we all take our lessons and playa tournament. Four o clock tennis is just an ordinary West chop ritual. The courts are clay courts and they are baked a reddish brown color. The policy is "all white" on the tennis courts. So when you look out you see a white blob spread out through the tennis courts. Only kids show up, its basically a pass time before dinner. There are benched set up around the courts for the kids who don't want to play. When I get back to Norwich its so weird because I am always looking forward to four o clock tennis.

  2. one place i truly love is located up in north Cannon VT. by Wallace Pond. This place is known as "camp". Camp was bulit by my grandfather and all of his brothers at age 15. throught the day the geese fly over head squacking as loud as they can. the geese fly so high that they look like little black dots in a V formation. our camp is two stories high. you walk in the front geen front door to a one room floor. deer heads from all the deer shot up there are hanging up o the pine finsh. if you look to the left you would see a bar with six spinning stools. behind the bar theres an old rusty sink a stove and a grittle. this is where we make brakefeast every morning, usely eggs and bacon. To the right of the sink there is a refigidator and a microwave. then next to the kitchen theres a small bathroom but usely people go out side. after the bathroom there is a storage place were we kept all our fire wood and tools. in the first floor of our camp there is a bed two couches three chairs and a small TV. if you look to the right when you walk in the door there is are stairs that lead up to the second story. up there is all beds. there are 15 beds on the left and right of the buliding and a small walk way throught the middle. my favorite time up at camp is when you go to bed. when you go to bed you fall asleep to the noises of all the old guys snoring and farting. but if your lucky it rains and you listen the sound of the rain hitting the tin roof.

  3. A place that I know very well and love is my kitchen. The kitchen in my house is of a fairly average size, but is open on all ends so that it connects to our study, living room, and entrance area. All the appliances in it are shiny grey with black, including the refrigerator, the blender, the toaster, the coffee maker, the oven, the stove, and the microwave. The handles on all of the drawers match the color scheme as well.
All of the drawers, cabinets, and more in the kitchen are cherry. There are two double windows that open out to the backyard, so if there's anyone out there, I can see them from the kitchen. The tiles on the walls around the sink and by the stove are white, but over the stovetop they have designs of fruits and vegetables on them. The walls are green, and we painted them ourselves two years ago.
In the middle of the kitchen there's an island with four black chairs. Every morning, when my sister and I have to wake up to eat breakfast before school, we sit in two of those black chairs. The kitchen is used for cooking, eating, homework, chatting, and more. That could be why it's one of my favorite places.

  4. A place I know and love is the den at my grandparents winter house. The den is placed so that you have to walk through it when you come in through the door in the garage (the door that is most commonly used) when you go in to the house, it has a fireplace on the west side of the room and part of the north and all of the south wall is lined with bookshelves. There is a blue velvet couch on south side of the room, and a blue leather armchair situated next to the fireplace. Their is a large persian rug that covers the whole floor and combines with the dim lamplight to make a very mellow atmoshpere. On top of the north wall book shelves which are divided by two windows an a tv are olp knick-knacks- old medicine bottles and whatnot. The walls are wood panels partially covered by a few large paintings. The time is a week after christmas, it is 8:00 pm and all of the other relatives

  5. A place that is really special to me is my grandmother's living room on Christmas morning in Utica, NY. It is comfortably warm because of the roaring fire in the 100 year old fire place that has lit up the room. The morning sun is just barely up, and its light is shining through the dusty, glazed over windows giving the place a yellowish tinge. The windows are cracked just enough so that an icy wind makes it not too hot, not too cold. All the gifts are resting under the Christmas tree and and the room smells like pine, cinnamon, and coffee. My mom, my grandma, my uncle, my aunt, and my dad are all in a semi circle of old chairs around the tree and fireplace, laughing drinking eggnog. The glass coffee table is shining with the sun's reflection and a bowl of M&Ms is taunting all who see it. Outside, the world is decorated with a calm white snow, and it has made a perfect scene for Christmas. This is my favorite time of year, in one of my favorite places on earth.

  7. A place that is special to me is my kitchen at my house in Meriden. The first reason is just because it has been in my life for 11 years now. And, because of this, I have a lot of memories in this kitchen. One memory that stands out the most was every christmas, I was the last one to wake up. And, when I woke up I would come downstairs to the kitchen and my whole family would be in their PJs, sitting around the counter discussing life. And, not only that, but the deep conversation was topped off with the smell of bacon and eggs. My kitchen wasn't too big but it wasn't too small. It was just right and it fit my family in it quite nicely. It also sits opposite our living room which has a large window that offers a beautiful view of the snow fall.

  9. A place that's special to me is my grandparents summer house. It's in Cape Cod, right on Popponesset Bay. Its about 30 yards from the ocean, with a barrier of trees keeping it private. The house has gray shingles, and a wooden deck that runs the length of the main two parts of the house. Its separated into 3 different sections, one being the annex which was added onto the main parts of the house and is connected to the rest by a covered wood walkway. It connects to "the North house", or the northern half of the original house. There is a middle room dividing the North house from the South house. I usually sleep in the North house. It has 4 bedrooms upstairs, and downstairs there is one big room with a kitchen and a dining table and a TV. The floor is wooden downstairs, and carpeted upstairs. There are 3 sliding doors, and we leave those open often to let the ocean air in. It smells of salt, and I can hear gulls crying and the waves beating on the shore. As I sit in a chair on a sunny afternoon, I can hear motorboats and people screaming out in the bay. It's always pretty peaceful, and if I'm bored I can run down to the beach and set up the Laser and go sailing.

  10. If I had to pick my favorite place, it would probably be on Treasure Island in Florida at this amazing hotel. It is right on the coast, and in the morning you can hear the waves rolling through your open window. The sea breezes blows gently and rustles the palm trees in the garden in the middle of the hotel. When you walk outside, you find 2 huge pools filled with playing kids, and 2 hot tubs filled with relaxing people. As you walk across the boardwalk to the beach, you can look out at the sea and the waves gently rolling onto the sand. It's always sunny, and the smell of sunscreen is in the air everywhere you go on the beach. You can find ladies sunbathing, and families with children building sandcastles and playing in the small waves, there. The beach is only empty when a storm has come. The seagulls are always screeching and scavenging for scraps or food from a picnic lunch. It is so peaceful there in the burning sun, and the waves make a calming sound to soothe any stress. I once saw a wedding ceremony there, and thought it was a perfect place of a romantic wedding.

  11. A place that I know and love, and have for the past four years is the avenue of the pines at Kamp Kohut, (yes camp is spelled with a "K".) I go there every summer for one month, and the highlight is the pines. It is called the avenue of the pines because it looks like a street, (except it is only dirt and roots,) and on both sides of that street, are rows of pine trees. It is aesthetically pleasing, and we gather on both sides of the pines before each meal (boys on one, girls on another.) The trees in the avenue must be as old as the camp, (103 years,) because in the avenue, there are a multitude of roots, and they are massive. It is one of those things that makes me feel reassured whenever I go to kamp.

  12. My place that I really like to just chill out in is my kitchen. It is rectangular and it is on the immediate right when you come in the front door to my house. It also has a table where we eat informal meals like breakfast. It has two ovens right on top of each other, and a big six burner stove. To the right of the stove is a wooden counter that we use as basically a big cutting board, and that is usually where all the cooking gets done. To the left of the stove there is a big granite counter that is a dark green. Just above the counter there are shelves where we keep bowls and plates. Under the counter there are cupboards where we keep pots, pans, forks knives and spoons, and other random cooking items.
The time when my kitchen is the most crowded is right before dinner time. Everyone can't wait for dinner, and want to see what my mom is making, as well as helping out by doing things for my mom like setting the table. The event when my kitchen is the most crowded is at thanksgiving. We generally have people over to our house for thanksgiving and it gets really packed. It's not that our kitchen is small, because it is actually quite large, its just that the smell of all the food draws everybody in.
Another reason that I like my kitchen is that I love to cook. I love anything that has to do with food, especially making and eating it. I really like making desserts, but making stir fry or something like that is always fun.

  13. The place that i wish I was all the time is my grand parents old lake house. They had to get rid of it because of taxes... which sucks. I got so mad at them for getting rid of that house. When I was there i could do whatever, I could hang out, I could go swimming, I could go on a boat ride, go tubing behind the boat, I could eat all day and no one would care. Anything, it was so amazing. Their house was probably and still is the biggest house I have ever been into. It is also one of the nicest houses I've been into. It had this really cool part that was called the tower and it was a couple stories higher than the actual house and i would hang out there a lot and sleep.

  14. One place that is very special to me is my summer house up on Southport Island, Maine. I go there every year for two weeks in the summer with my dad. I have been going there since I was a baby, so naturally, I have grown to love it. The house sits right on the water and has a 3/4 wrap around deck, so in the morning we usually all eat our breakfast outside, while watching the water. Before we wake up for the morning, my sister and I share a room facing out towards the ocean. There are two twin beds in the room that have got to be the most comfortable beds anyone has ever slept in. After breakfast lots of us usually want to go for a boat ride because during low tide is when the seals come out. The seaweed is stuck to the rocks and the ramp going down to the dock is almost verticle. This time of day the water gently rolls and crashes into our rocks. Boat rides to town are something we all love to do everyday.
Nightime in Maine is one of the best times of the day. In our house we buld fires at night to keep us warm while we play intense matches of CLUE. The fire is crackling, and people are roasting S'Mores. If you go up to our house you will never be bored. There are so many options and fun things to do, which is one reason why I love it so much.

  15. A place that I love is a timeshare that my family visits every year during spring vacation in Orlando, Florida. During this time we always visit Disney World and Universal Studios. The view was the most stunning feature of the timeshare. Located on the top floor overlooking a pond, pool, and golf course, the balcony is the best place to view these sights at sunset. I would walk outside after returning from a park, and I could see the orange-pink streaks accross the sky. The tops of palm trees stand next to the balcony. There's a beautiful white bridge that connects one side of the pond to the other, where other timeshares are located. From the top floor you can still hear the carribean music that resonates from the pool all day. The humidity carries the heat from the day well into the night, so even though the sun sets, a warm breeze can be felt. It's a magical place to me, and I can't wait every year to return.

  16. A place that I love is my aunt and uncles house in Ojai (oh-hi), California. Its a beautiful house built into one of the mountains that run through the town. Half of the house is actually part of the mountain. The town is basically one big coffee house, because they are a big part in california's coffee industry. Not only does it feel like a coffeehouse but it smells like it. Different blends of coffee run through the air and hit your nose within the mile and a half the town is built on. Ojai has a low amount of people living there, but a high amount of beauty. to the east are mountains, sun tanned and tall, to the west are more towns and most of all beaches. The small college in the town houses a pool and a 10 foot diving board. Two summers ago my family had a reunion and we stayed in the dorms of the college, and the pool, along with its diving board, were among some of the biggest hot spots. Get past the hustle and bustle of the reunion and you might take a walk or a hike on some of the trails in the town which are just as beautiful as the beaches to the west. The palms mixed in with the sun and the animals on a hot day is the perfect environment for this quaint little town. I hope to go back soon, only being there thrice before i havent yet gotten the full thrill of the town.
