Question of the Week (4/8/11)

As we have discussed in class you will be writing about yourself and your life in the Upper Valley to a student in the Marshall Islands. Look at the beautiful Marshall Islands and the students, in the pictures above, with whom you will be sharing your writing.
Be sure to be very descriptive in your writing as the students you are writing to have probably never been to New England. You may write about the following: your school, sports, books you are currently reading, movies you like/dislike, pets, places you've traveled, summer camp, plans for this summer, or for the future in general. If you can, post a picture of yourself. You post is due no later than the end of the school day on Tuesday, April 12. A student from Marshall Islands High School will respond to you. Have fun with your new blogpal!

  1. Hello! My name is Clark Leazier. I'm fourteen years old and I live in Norwich, Vermont. Up in Vermont, we don't have very nice weather year round. For about half the year it snows, and in the summer its only nice for about three months. My favorite season if fall, because it looks really pretty in Vermont with all the leaves on the ground. What is the weather like in the Marshall islands? The school I go to is called Hanover High School. About 700 students attend this school, which isn't very big compared to most US schools. The school is very nice, and I really enjoy all my teachers and classes. I play two sports, cross country running and I row crew. I have one brother, named Oliver, and two sisters, Isabelle and Eloise. My parents names are Amy and Chris. I have one pet, a cat named Sammy. My family does quite a bit of traveling. Last spring, I spent four months in Germany, and about five years ago we spent three months in Scotland. The last movie I watched was The Fighter. I really like all kinds of music, but my all time favorite band is the Rolling Stones. This summer my family is spending a week in Florida, and we're going to Disneyworld. I am eager to hear about your family and things you like to do!

  2. Hello! My name is Catherine Collison and I am 15 years old. I live in Hanover, New Hampshire, which is right on the border between Vermont and New Hampshire. Hanover is an extremely beautiful town, and I consider myself very lucky to live here. We have breathtaking autumns with the many trees in New Hampshire turning from green to yellow, red, and orange, lovely, snowy winters, warm, fragrant springs, and surprisingly hot summers for being this far north (according to me, but probably not according to you)! I understand that the Marshall Islands are relatively close to Australia and New Zealand. Have you ever travelled to either of these countries? I really would like to travel to Australia one day, and maybe even to the Marshall Islands as well, but the farthest I've ever been from home is to Ireland and Costa Rica. As I said before, I live in New Hampshire with my sister Caroline, my brother Charlie, and my mom and dad, who both work at my dad's medical office (he's a dermatologist). I'm the youngest in my family, besides my cat Marcus, who is probably older than me in cat years anyway. I like ice hockey, acting, photography, listening to music and watching movies. My favorite bands are Vampire Weekend, Gorillaz, Yelle, Kylie Minogue, Lady Gaga, and older bands like The Clash and Billy Joel. What are some of your interests, and what is life like in the Marshall Islands? I already can't wait to hear back from you!

    Sincerely,
    Catherine

  3. Hi! My name is Eileen. I am 15 and live in Hanover, New Hampshire. New Hampshire is a small state in the northeastern part of the US. It's pretty cold during the winter and there is usually snow for half the year. I still have snow at my house now. It does get warm in the summer and sometimes it's over 90 degrees out. This summer my family is going to my grandparents’ beach house in Massachusetts. The water probably isn't as nice there as it is where you live. It stays kind of cold even in the summer. Two summers ago we went to Germany. We go there quite often because my mom is from there but I haven't been to many other places around the world. Have you been to any foreign countries? I have a younger brother who’s 9 named Patrick and a sister named Lillian who is 16. I also have a dog, rabbits and chickens. Do you have pets? My favorite sport is basketball which I play during the winter. In the spring I play lacrosse and in the fall I play soccer. The school I go to is Hanover High School and about 700 students go there. Hopefully I’ll hear about you soon!

  4. Hello! My name is Sumner LeBaron-Brien, I am fifteen years old and I live in Norwich,Vermont. Vermont is my favorite state and always has been. We have hot summers and very snowy winters. Vermont is located in the top right corner of the US, surrounded by three other New England states; New York, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. I lived in Vermont until I was 5 and then moved to Massachusetts for 8 years, but moved back in 8th grade. I am an alpine ski racer, I play field hockey and I just began to row crew this year. I have had a great first year in Hanover High School and I am looking forward to sophomore year! My plans for this summer consist of working on a farm, traveling and playing field hockey. The farthest I have traveled was to Hawaii two years ago. I've also been to Jamaica and The Bahamas. I have 4 dogs and 3 cats, many chickens and soon we will be getting pigs and cows. I have two siblings, my sister Britt who is 17 and a younger brother Luke who is 7. We'd all love to hear about your lives in the Marshall Islands, so write back!

  5. Hi!
I'm Alexandra, I'm 14 and I live in Hanover NH. I enjoy dancing, singing, acting, and percussion. I am currently involved in the show Fiddler On The Roof! I am in four different band groups at our school. The regular Band, the Wind Orchestra, the Jazz Band, and the Wind Ensemble. I went on the wind ensemble's trip to Germany last month, it was a blast! After school, I go to rehearsal, every week day. After I go to the public library, and then go home. Apparently it's supposed to be 80 degrees tomorrow, which is quite unseasonal. Usually in April we have 50-60 degree weather at best. I have a 16 year old sister named Jocelyn. Her 17th birthday is tomorrow. I am legit half Canadian. Duel citizenship. I hope to hear back soon!

  6. Hello! My name is Camille Hankel and I'm 14 years old. I live in Norwich Vermont but I go to school at Hanover High School in New Hampshire. I really like tennis, but I also play soccer in the fall. The tennis season just started, but we haven't been able to play any matches because there is still about four inches of snow on some of the courts. I have a little brother named X, who is 10 years old. He has a small fish tank in his room with several fish, and unfortunately those are our only pets. I really like to travel: last summer I went to Spain and Portugal with my family, and we frequently drive up to Montreal, Canada for short vacations. Every year my family goes to Wisconsin to visit all of our relatives there. I don't really like doing that because it's an 18-hour drive and all that's in Wisconsin is cornfields and cheese.
Hope to hear from you soon about your life in the Marshall Islands!

  7. Hello! My name is Lena Dubitsky, and I’m 14 years old. I live in Hanover, New Hampshire, which is right on the Connecticut River. Hanover is great place to live, it’s surrounded by hills and forests. Hanover is a pretty small town compared to other towns in the U.S, we have 10,000 people or so. Going hiking in the fall is really nice, especially when all of the leaves on the trees turn bright yellow and orange. Our summers are hot, the winters are cold and snowy, and spring is muddy. Overall, I think we have a pretty good mix of seasons! How is the weather on the Marshall Islands? Our high school has about 700 students. How big is your town? During the school year, I cross-country ski in the winter, play soccer in the fall, and row in the spring. I also play piano and the clarinet. The furthest I have traveled is Turkey. I have also visited Ukraine, where my family is from, and the Dominican Republic. What places have you visited? I have two older siblings, my brother Andrei and my sister Natasha. I have one pet, a cat, although we do have a group of wild turkeys that wander around our backyard in the fall. You can also see foxes, deer, and bears. What kinds of wild animals can you find on the Marshall Islands? Do you have any pets? I’m looking forward to hearing from you!

  8. Hello! My name is Valentina Sedlacek and live in Hanover, NH but I have lived in several places in my life. I was born in New York City and lived there until I moved to Germany for two years, then back to the United States in Norwich, VT for two years and finally across the river to Hanover. I am 14 years old and have two sisters, Andrea who is 13 and Paula who is 8, and two dogs- Schatzi and Chico. Do you have any pets and any siblings?
This week it has just started to get warm. Here in NH the summer is warm but short and spring and fall are beautiful. Winter is the longest and really cold, but there are a lot of things to do around here to pass the time. Along with school, you can skate, ski downhill and cross country, sled, snowshoe, play in the snow, go to see movies, see the christmas tree lit in the green by the college and much much more. This winter I was on the school swim team and skied a lot, there is a skiway 15 minutes from my house. Now in spring I am starting crew which is on the river rowing early in the mornings when it is still frozen. In the fall I play Field Hockey. What sports do you play and enjoy? Do you play for your school or just for fun?
Hanover is small, but I love traveling. This summer I am going to Spain, but have visited Chile, Germany and all over Europe. In my family we speak spanish (my mom is from Chile) and german (my father is from Germany), with english as the middle language. Have you ever traveled? If so, where have you gone? I would love to visit the Marshall Islands some time, it looks so warm! We have summer vacation only a few months away so I am hoping we will have no more snow!
I look forward to hearing from you, about your life and the Marshall Islands!

  9. Hello! My name is Rachel Boghosian and I live in Hanover, NH. I'm going to the Hanover High School along with all of the students who will be writing you. I have one older brother named Adam and he’s 22 years old. I’m 14 but I will be turning 15 in May. Right now, I'm playing on the varsity lacrosse team here at Hanover and I also play soccer and basketball. What kind of sports do you play in the Marshall Islands? Along with my sports, I really enjoy spending time with my friends, watching movies, running, and just hanging out. Hanover is a pretty small town but I think it's beautiful all year round. It is located around a college campus so there are always fun things to do and many people to meet. The schoolwork is a little heavier this year because I'm now in high school, but I've gotten used to it. This week is especially hard because it's the end of the quarter so we have a lot of assignments and tests to fit in before the grades end. I'm really looking forward to this summer because I will be going to Costa Rica for a service and surf project with one of my close friends. I'm really excited! I'm not going to any long overnight camps this year because I'm going to be spending most of my time relaxing, taking in the warm weather, and getting ready for next years sports seasons. Along with the Costa Rica trip, my family and I will hopefully going somewhere in Europe before the summer ends. The weather is still pretty cold here even though it's supposed to be spring so I'm really excited for it to be warm again. Anyways, I can't wait to hear from all of you about what life is like in the Marshall Islands! Hope you all are having a fantastic school year and are looking forward to summer just as much as I am.
    Sincerely,
    Rachel B

  10. Howdy,
My name is Austin! I like the others in my class am from Hanover NH. It is a small town where not much happens. I am fourteen and will be fifteen on April 28. I am on the crew team here, and play many other sports such as soccer, track, and sometimes baseball. Aside from sports, I spend most of my time doing homework and playing COD. I only like horror movies and horror books. Stephen King is my favorite author of all time (although i do not have time to read his books because I have to read boring english class books). My favorite place to go is Mexico and fortunately i will be going there next week! Have you ever been to mexico? I do unfortunately have one sister. Her name is Kristin and she is probably the most annoying person I have ever met. Though these things may not interest you, I do not have a clue what to write because I have no idea who I am writing to haha.
    Questions I have for you,
    What is your favorite sport(s)?
    Is school difficult there?
    Do you have any siblings?
    What is the weather like?
    Thanks!
I cannot wait to hear from you!
    Austin

  11. Hello, my name is Matt Leskovar. I am a student at Hanover High school. Currently I am playing lacrosse, but I also like to play hockey and soccer. Sports at Hanover are a big deal. I have two dogs and three siblings. I spend most of my after school time playing sports and doing lots of english homework. Do you have a favorite sport? On the Weekends I like to spend time with my dogs, play video games, hang out with friends, and ride my bike. Today is my birthday, I am turning fifteen. This summer I will hopefully go to Virginia to swim at the beach and visit my grandparents. I love to swim on the warm, sunny beach. I am having a great first year at Hanover High and am looking forward to next year. What do you like to do? Do you have any pets? Whats the weather like? I look forward to hearing from you!

  12. Hello my name is Charly Voelkel. I am 14 years old. I live in Norwich, VT which is located just across the river from Hanover High School in New Hampshire. Our nearest city is Boston, but the bustling metropolis of New York City is just 5 hours car ride away. I moved to Vermont when I was 6 from London, so everyone here thinks I talk strangely. I play field hockey and ski. This year I also took up crew which is a little crazy because we have to wake up super early and row on a river with ice burgs before school. What sports do you play? Are there any that are special to the Marshall Islands? I have two siblings, a 17 year old brother named Harry and an eight year old sister named Loulou. I have two cats name Ferdinand and Xena. Right now it's finally getting warm after having been a frigid winter for about 5 months. Though my house is still surrounded in snow, it's wonderful to finally see the sun! Generally people like the autumn best because of the bright colors of all the leaves, but I love summer and the way everything is colorful, bright, and warm. The Marshall Islands look lovely and warm. I love to travel, particularly around Europe and especially back home to England. What sorts of places do you go, considering you already live in a beautiful vacation spot? One of my favorite things is music, especially that from the 60's and 70's (think The Turtles, Rolling Stones, Beach Boys, Otis Redding, Grand Funk Railroad, The Supremes, The Temptations, ect) I play the guitar, the piano, and until two years ago, the saxophone. Do you play any instruments? I hope you've enjoyed hearing about me, I certainly can't wait to hear about you and what life is like in the Marshall Islands!

  13. Hello my name is Jara Kühne. I will be 15 in three days and live in Lyme, New Hampshire but I have lived in a few different places. I was born in Berlin, Germany but I can’t remember it because we moved when I was two. Then we moved to Vermont and lived there for six years. I prefer Vermont over New Hampshire. They are very similar but Vermont has nicer forests and more colorful trees in the fall (in my opinion). I have moved to Germany and here since then. We visit Germany every year and this summer my friend and I are planning to go to Ireland and Germany together. I love to read but I am not reading a book currently because we just finished a book in english and I think I can wait until my birthday for a new one. I also like to swim. I only have one 13 year old brother, Leon and two dogs, Lilly and Ella. Do you have any pets? Have you ever lived somewhere else? How do you like the Marshall Islands? I can’t wait to hear from you!

  15. Hi, my name is Miles Campbell. I live in Norwich,Vermont. Norwich is the town that is located right next to Hanover which is the school where I go. The winter here is leaving, and as the temperatures rise so does our excitement. This year we have been having an unusually long winter, with many huge snowstorms. Now it is much warmer, and I am hoping to begin biking the four miles to school in the morning next week. Let me tell you a little about myself. I am fourteen years old and will be turning fifteen in November. Last year I lived for half the year in Spain, and I went to school there and had many fun experiences. We traveled around Europe a lot that year, but I have been there many times before because I have family in England. I also lived in England for a year when I was in second grade. I play tennis, soccer, squash and I downhill and cross-country ski. This year has been very demanding from school, but this is expected because I am in high school now. What sports do you play in the marshall islands? I have an eleven year old brother, named Will, and a cat and a few chickens. I really like my life here. I moved up here when I was eight and it was a big adjustment for me because I moved from the big city of New York. I am sure that you have heard of New York. When I lived in Spain this was the one place that kids wanted to go to if they came to the US. It is great up here, you can breathe fresh air any day and go on walks and runs without sound pollution. I am looking forward to the summer and have many fun activities in mind. What are you going to do this summer? I am eager to hear from you and hope that we can have about your and my lives.
    Miles

  16. Hello! My name is Eleanor Green and I am 15 years old. I've lived in Hanover, New Hampshire for my entire life. New England is a beautiful region, with colorful autumns and very snowy winters! I consider myself very lucky to live in such a beautiful place, but at times I would give anything to live on the beach. It's also a fairly rural area, so I enjoy visiting cities when I get the chance. What is the weather like on the Marshall Islands? I have a 7-year-old brother who is adopted from Russia. His full name is Alexander, but we call him Sasha for short (it's a pretty common nick name in Russia for both boys and girls). I also have a cat named Zoe. Do you have any pets or siblings? I enjoy playing soccer in the fall as well as tennis in the spring and summer. My favorite sport is gymnastics which I do year-round. Occasionally I'll even cross country ski in my backyard during the winter. What are your favorite sports? Other things that I like to do: any sort of artwork, mostly drawing, spending time with friends, playing sports, and traveling to other countries. My mom also makes me play the piano...I'm not such a fan of that. High School here can be pretty stressful, especially since 3rd quarter just ended. What is school like in the Marshall Islands? Fortunately, April vacation is only a week away! This summer I won't be getting to travel at all, since I'm going to sleep-away camp for 8 weeks. I'm going to be a CT (counselor in training). What are you doing this summer?

    -Eleanor

  17. Hello my name is Annalee and I am 14 years old. I live in Lyme New Hampshire where we got to choose our high school, which is why I came here. I like it here, and am excited for spring to come. I prefer the warmer weather, although I don’t want it to get to hot soon. Our house is surrounded by the woods and we also have a field outside, so spring is always pretty. I have two brothers, one is a sophomore and one in fifth grade, and a sister in third grade. We also have a dog and a cat. The class I am enjoying the most so far is French, because I enjoy learning something completely different and that is not necessary for me to do so am I able to learn it because I enjoy it. The only sport I do is gymnastics, since it is all year so we don’t get many breaks. Our competition season is mostly during the winter time, and the rest of the year is used to help us get our new skills. I also coach there sometimes, and it helps me learn that it is just as hard to be a coach. I tend to not travel a lot and like to stay where I am, so this summer most of my time will be spent here. I am going to one camp in Springfield, Massachusetts for a few days with some of my teammates, although thats about it. I also play the flute in the band, and take lessons outside of school when I can find the time. I’m looking forward to hearing from you soon!

  18. Hi guys, my name is Hayden Slayton, but my friends like to call me Hay-Slay, so thats cool too. I've lived in Norwich, Vermont my whole life and I'm going to Hanover High School. I'm 15 so I'm a freshman, but we never really get bullied around here so it's all good. My most favorite thing to do is skateboard. I've been skating for about 2 and half years even though New England isn't the best place for it. Sometimes, if were lucky, we get a beautiful and sunny day, but around this time of year it's usually gloomy. We still have snow up here too! Have any of you ever seen snow? My favorite subject in school is math, because you don't have to be creative; you can just do work and answer problems. I have a summer house on cape cod, peninsula in Massachusetts just south of NH and VT. In the summer I usually stay there for about two weeks with my family. Also the property is really nice, because you can just walk out the front door and go down the steps to the beach; but you guys can do that whenever right? I'm doing a lot of other stuff this summer, but I don't want to type an essay. I'm excited to hear from you guys!

  19. What's up my name is Shawn Cavallaro and I just recently moved to Hanover, New Hampshire and i love it up here. It is different from my old town because it's always nice and it is a great place to live. I also like Hanover because it is close to Dartmouth College which means we are always close to the campus and there are always sports games going on. Football is my favorite sport and I train year-round for it I also play hockey and lacrosse. In the summer I mostly hang out with my cousins and friends on Lake Winnipesaukee which is also in New Hampshire. It is a great place to spend the summer and is usually nice. I have two brothers who are 13 years old and the other is in college. I'm looking forward to talk to you guys and hear what your lives are like compared to ours.

  23. Hi! My name is James Wolfe, and I live in Hanover, New Hampshire. I have a younger brother, who is bigger than I am, and I play Ultimate Frisbee at Hanover High School. What kind of sports do you have? Do you live near the ocean? There is no ocean near Hanover, only mountains, so there is a lot of skiing in the winter. What are the seasons like in your part of the world? What is your school like? Thanks for reading!

  24. Hi! My name is Ethan Shipulski. I live in Etna, New Hampshire, which is in Hanover, but far out of town. I usually get a lot more snow in our cold winters than everyone else, but I like it. This year, we had about 2 and a half feet of snow at one point. What is the weather like there? Hanover High School is great. There are some awesome courses that are offered, and even the required courses are fun. I am learning a lot. What are your schools like there? I play hockey in the winter and throughout most of the year, and I play baseball in the spring. What sports do you play? Do you have any special sports or activities that we don't have here? Thanks for reading and write back!

I play Hockey, Lacrosse, and Golf all for Hanover High School. Do yoy play any sports? I have an older brother named Ben who is a senior at Hanover who is the captain of the varsity Hockey and Golf team here at Hanover. This school is great and there are awesome students and teachers here. In Hanover it is nice in the summer time and the snow is fun in the winter. I have lived in Hanover all my life and there is no other place I would rather live in.

  26. Hey guys,
My name is Daniel Hazlett and I live in Norwich, Vt. I have lived her for five years and I will say that I like it a lot, even though the winter is very long, cold and snowy. Like my friends, I also go to Hanover High school. Since Norwich is such a small town, it does not have its own high school or middle school. After we finish 6th grade, we join the Hanover kids for middle and high school. My favorite sport is soccer and I play it all year round even though I also play basketball in the winter. This past fall, I played on the Hanover Varsity soccer team. I was one of two fresmen who made the varsity team and we ended up doing really well. We won the state championship! Hanover now has won the state championship for soccer six years in a row, which explains why they have such a good soccer program. Oh and by the way, I play forward. In the spring, I play on a club soccer team called Upper Valley Lightning, which consists of kids from Hanover, Norwich and somer other near by towns. Most of the age groups for lightning are okay, but my ages group is really good. We have won lots of tournaments and last year, we won the state championship and went to West Virginia for regionals. Regionals is a tournment that the champions from 15 states play in. We did really well there but unfortunately, we did not make it to the semi-finals. I like it here in Hanover because of many reasons but one of the most important reason is because it is such a good soccer community. Do you play any sports? What is it like in Marshall Islands?
    Peace
    Dan

  27. Hi! My name is Natalie Cady (pronounced Katie, everyone usually gets my last name wrong.) I am fourteen years old, I live in Lyme, New Hampshire with my dad and our two dogs and four cats. It’s a long story, but to shorten it, before my stepmom and my dad got a divorce my stepsister was going to go to college. My mom brought home two more cats! ( Originally, we only had two dogs and two cats.) One of my dogs names is Willow and she is a black lab. My other dogs name is Buster, he is a beagle/ basset hound, he looks like a normal dog on really short legs. One of my cats is my favorite, her name is Jasmine, she is gray and is not to be confused with lucy, my other gray kitty they look very similar. Another cat is all black with piercing green eyes, she is very shy and we call her my dad’s cat because she loves him very much, she is two years old and this is her first home. Last, but not least my other cat, the only male cat, Pan, short for Peter Pan (we got him when I was little, hence the name.) Anyway, I go to Hanover High School, I really like it here. My favorite class is science and spanish. I have watched a lot of movies lately over the weekends with my friends. I’ve watched the adjustment Bureau which was fine, although the sound boom kept getting into the frame which distracting me from the plot. They should have been more careful because after awhile it was very annoying. Another movie I just recently watched was Tron, I really enjoyed it, the movie had action and had a love story, but it seemed to serious. I also saw the movie Red, which was so good, it was about these retired spy agents, and someone was trying to kill them all but they change there mind and end up as a team again. The last movie that I was the Tourist, I highly recommend to anyone that likes action, love stories, and comedy. The Tourist has Angelina Jolie (as Elise) and Jonny Depp ( as Frank), together they are absolutely hilarious! It revolves around Frank, an American tourist that is visiting Italy to mend a broken heart. Elise is an extraordinary women who deliberately comes into his life. I was just looking out my window and noticed that the rain is melting away the snow, We have had so much snow lately I am glad that it’s leaving! What you guys doing for april break? I am not doing much, but it’s nice to take a break from school.I would love to know what your lives are like and your weather.
