  1. Of the short stories we have read, my favorite was The Necklace. It had a moral, it was the most ironic, and it was entertaining to read.
The moral of The Necklace was that if Madame Loisel would have just told her friend the truth, she would have enjoyed a much better life. Madame Loisel said to Madame Forrestier, "I bought you another one just like it. And for the last ten years we have been paying for it. You realize it wasn't easy for us; we had no money... Well, it's paid for at last, and I'm mighty glad." All of that could have been spared if she had just told her friend that she lost the necklace.
The Necklace was also ironic for the same reason, which was that Madame Loisel didn't tell Madame Forrestier what had happened. At the end of the story, Madame Loisel figures out that after she wasted a good part of her life, it was unnecessary because the necklace was fake, but she and her husband were paying for real diamonds. The irony added a twist to the end that made the whole story seem worth reading. Without that ending, the story would have been much more boring. The irony of The Necklace added significantly to the story.
Aside from those reasons, The Necklace was an entertaining story. It may not have been that way for a character in real life like Madame Loisel, who really cared about caste and class, but I thought it was funny how Madame Loisel thought so much about those types of things. For example, when she is invited to the big party, instead of being happy she just cries and says, "Only I haven't a dress so I can't go to this party. Give your invitation to some friend of yours whose wife will be turned out better than I shall." To Madame Loisel, everything was about appearances, and even when someone was doing a nice thing for her, she didn't care because she thought she had a horrible life. I thought that aspect also added to the story. Because of that, The Necklace was my favorite short story.

  2. Out of all of the short stories that we read, I'd have to say that my favorite one was, "A Good Man is Hard to Find." I found that it was the only one that really surprised me at the end.
I found it disturbing how horribly the entire family treated the grandma. When she was talking about how the misfit was around the area that they were going, the family completely ignored her. June Star, her granddaughter doesn't respect her at all when she says, "'She wouldn't stay home to be Queen for a day,' June Star said without raising her yellow head." They are all so mean to the grandma, and that's what gets them killed in the end.
After the misfit had found them, and was talking to the grandma, he sounded almost civil. While I was reading, I really thought that he was going to let them go when he said, "'Lady,' he asked, 'would you and that little girl like to step off yonder with Bobby Lee and Hiram and join your husband?'"
I thought that he was going to talk to the grandma more, and then help them out. When I realized what had actually happened, I was more shocked than by any of the other short stories. That's why this story was my favorite, because it was unexpected.

  3. I found that the best short story out of all the ones that we read was "A Good Man is Hard to Find" by Flannery O'Conner. I think that this was the best because it was making references to what was going to happen the entire time. When the grandmother asked the boy John Wesley what he would do if he got caught by the Misfit and he said, "I'd smack his face." I think that adds a lot to the story because he gives a short answer and then they do get caught by the Misfit.
I also like it because of the irony. It is ironic that the grandmother was so sure that this plan to see this house that was only in her imagination and then it ends up killing them all.
